Art Inspiration!

I’m a watercolour artist. My starting point is always scenery, or a picture that catches my eye. I love wildlife, animals, flowers, plants and landscapes. I’m always on the lookout, whether I’m out and about, or browsing in a magazine.

I start by drawing a rough outline of the subject. This is followed by adding a colour wash where appropriate, then building up the colours as the picture progresses. I love detail, so this is the last thing I concentrate on.

All my pictures (so far) are watercolour. Oils (that Mum used) are a whole different ball game, and I don’t think it’s for me, besides, I don’t have the right tools for the job, so I think I’ll stick to watercolour.

The book

This is a completel different story (please excuse the pun!).

Memoirs of a WAAF is all bout diaries my Mum wrote, in secret, while serving in the WAAF in World War 2.

My Background

I’ve always liked art and painting, and creativity runs in my dear late Mum’s side of the family (her father was an artist and architect. She painted quite a lot over the years, many of which she sold. I fondly remember the smell of oil paints and turps when she was painting.

It wasn’t until I semi-retired (2024-25), and had more time to spare, that I took up painting again. Thankfully I had kept many of my old paints and tools, and together with those inherited from my dear Mum (who very sadly passed away in 2017), all this was partly what helped inspire me to start up again. I’m so glad I did!

Then, a couple of years ago, I joined a small art group in Uckfield, and over the weeks I realised that my work was improving (or so my husband told me!). Naturally that spurred me on to do more!

Then, towards the end of 2025 I felt it was time to move on, so I joined Uckfield Art Group, a larger group, which I still attend today. I’m so glad I did as the opportunities have grown and so have my skills.

I’m mostly self-taught, only having had a small amount of tuition at Adult Education evening classes a few years ago.
